Spring is here, days are getting longer and water temperatures are rising. Speckled trout are starting to feed more in preparation for the spawn. Speckled trout will start to spawn in Louisiana when the water temperatures reach a consistent 68 degrees with an increasing photoperiod. The best way to find Specks in the spring is with a popping cork.

I like a Versamaxx Bolt with a 30# mono leader about 24” long tied to a 1/8 Oz Goldeneye jig and a Gulp or Matrix plastic, I start with light colors and change if needed. Check the marina for live shrimp, if available fish will not pass up a live shrimp.

If I’m fishing water 8ft or less I use a popping cork, if the water is deeper I’ll fish a 3/8 Goldeneye jig with a Matrix, Gulp or live shrimp on a drop shot.

The Bridges over Lake Pontchartrain have started to produce some nice Specks. Bass and Redfish are all along the marshes lining the ICWW, MRGO and the Biloxi Marsh. Spinners, Spoons and shrimp under a cork will get the hard fighting Redfish on your line.
